Our Initiatives
Fall
September – November
- Recruitment & planning
- Halloween Goodie Bags
- Park Clean Up
- Volunteering at school and community tabling events
The YAT starts the year off strong building our team with new members, especially new freshmen. Before it gets cold, we like to do a park clean up where we tally substance litter (cigarette butts, beer cans, etc.). We also do our first goodie bag initiative of the year during Halloween to boost morale and spread mental health resources.
Winter
December – February
- CADCA Leadership Forum
- 84 Movement Youth Leadership Conference
- Candy Grams
- Alcohol Policy Training
During the winter, the YAT travels to Washington, D.C. to attend the CADCA Leadership Forum. There, they participate in workshops and connect with other coalitions to build prevention skills and advocate for increased funding for prevention efforts. Students also attend Alcohol Policy Trainings, which provide them with knowledge of the laws that exist around alcohol in Massachusetts in preparation for advocacy days at the State House. Before February break, candy grams are given out to students to spread positivity and kindness. Students can nominate other students to receive a bag filled with candy, fidget toys, and stickers.
Spring
March – June
- State House Advocacy Days
- Wellness Field Day
- Youth Leadership Conference
- Mental Health Goodie Bags
- Mural painting
- Filming educational videos for middle school wellness classes
During the spring, the YAT travels to the State House for ENUFF Day, an initiative to prevent nicotine use, and other Advocacy Days related to alcohol use prevention. Students can speak directly to legislators in an effort to enact real change in their community. Additionally, they have the opportunity to make a physical mark on the schools through painting a mural filled with protective factors and filming education videos for middle school wellness classes. The Wellness Field Day, hosted by the YAT, is a chance for HHS students to experience interactive stations to learn about the dangers of impaired driving and the impacts of substances on the brain.
